Winter is such a beautiful time of year. The cooler weather is a great excuse to indulge in hot baths, deep mugs of tea and cozy cuddles on the couch – Bliss!
Not so heavenly, though, is the way the cold can wreak havoc on our skin. With its dry air, temperature fluctuations and harsh conditions, winter can make our skin severely stressed. The impact can be even greater for babies who have especially delicate skin (did you know that a baby’s skin is around 30% thinner than yours, making it more prone to moisture loss?)
There is no doubt that winter is a time when we need to give our skin a little extra TLC. There are a number of ways you can nourish your and your baby’s skin naturally and safely. Here’s our top five winter skincare tips for mum and baby:
- Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
Dry skin is commonplace in winter. The effects can range from a tight, uncomfortable feeling, to more severe chapping and cracking. For babies (and some adults) eczema flare-ups are also common.
To combat dry skin use a quality body lotion each day. Applying lotion directly after your baby's bath (to slightly damp skin) will help create a protective layer on the skin, locking in moisture and shielding the skin from the environment. We recommend our Organic Soothing Baby Lotion which is also loaded up with herbal extracts to soothe redness and irritation.
- Use a barrier balm
We are all familiar with the way the wind can affect a baby’s chubby cheeks. Prevent wind-burned cheeks by using a barrier balm on your little one’s face. Our Bottom Balm is perfect for use on the face, including around the mouth. It forms a barrier against the elements, while still allowing the skin to breathe.
And don’t forget yourself, mum. A barrier balm on the nose, cheeks and lips will keep chapping at bay.
- Avoid soap and harsh detergents
Some baby body washes include harsh detergents (including sulfates) to create foam and bubbles. These detergents, however, can strip the skin of its essential natural oils – the last thing you need during winter!
When bathing your baby, choose a wash that is soap and sulfate free. Our Gentle Baby Wash is made using organic oils and herbal extracts to nourish and protect the skin during the cooler weather. This wash can also be enjoyed by the whole family.
- Take a milk bath
The proteins, fats and vitamins in milk can help sooth dry, irritated skin. In the colder months, an indulgent milk bath can be a great way to moisturise the skin while combating stubborn dry patches.
Our Milk & Honey Bath Soak is a popular product for alleviating dry skin, including that associated with eczema. As a product that can be used by the whole family, it’s one of our favourites for mum and baby to enjoy together. Fill a tub, grab your little one and relax (just like Cleopatra, darling!) Just remember to ensure the water is warm, and not hot.
- Enjoy baby massage
Massage is a wonderful way to bond with your baby and calm them before sleep. But it can also have positive skin benefits. When using a cold-pressed vegetable oil, baby massage is wonderful way to provide the skin with nutrients and keep it nourished throughout winter.
